Sunderland Youth Council (SYC) is an advisory network of young people aged 11 to 19. With support from Together for Children, elected members and decision makers from across the city, Sunderland Youth Council make sure that young people's voices are heard.
Any young person can be part of Sunderland Youth Council providing they are under the age of 19. Members with special educational needs and disabilities can take part until they are 25.
What does it involve?
Sunderland Youth Council meets weekly at City Hall on Wednesday's from 5pm to 6.30pm. The group provides an opportunity for young people to make new friends and discuss issues that matter to them. Members are supported to attend meetings at a local and national level to help drive change.
Members attend an annual House of Commons debate and every year they run a local campaign through the Sunderland State of the City debate. This allows young people across Sunderland to vote for the topic they would like the Sunderland Youth Council to focus on for the next year. Past issues have included homelessness, mental health and protecting the environment.
