Car parks in Sunderland

There is no charge for parking in the following car parks:
- Parking in the Sunderland area (east of A19) excluding the city centre
- Parking in the Houghton le Spring area
- Parking in the Hetton le Hole area
- Parking in the Washington area

Charge your car
Plug in and power up at one of the city's 50 electric vehicle re-charging points. Electric vehicle drivers can register on line to become a member of the Charge Your Car scheme.
If you own or are using an electric vehicle, you can apply to become a member of the scheme.

Controlled parking zones
In Sunderland city centre there is a Controlled Parking Zone within the area bound by the signs located on the access routes in to the city centre which inform motorists that they are entering the Controlled Parking Zone.

Disabled parking
There is information about how to use a Blue Badge and clock and any charges that may apply.
Vehicles displaying a disabled blue badge may park free of charge without time limit in any of the on and off street parking bays except at the following:
- St Mary's Car Park (normal charges apply)
- Sunniside Multi Storey Car Park: (normal charges apply)
- Prince Street/South Street: private permit holders only

The Blue Badge scheme helps people with disabilities access essential community facilities.

Please be aware that the eligibility criteria for the award of a Blue Badge is changing and will soon include some new criteria that will broaden the number of people who will be able to benefit from the Blue Badge Scheme.
Although a national decision has been taken to do this, individual issuing authorities have not yet been given a date from when the new criteria will be introduced.

There are two council car parks available for evening and overnight parking in the city centre.

Park free in Sunderland city centre after 3pm on Thursdays all year round, in council car parks and on street parking bays.

You can pay for your parking by mobile, phone or app at various locations in Sunderland and, if you're away from your car for longer than expected, you don't need to return to the meter to pay for extra parking time... you can just 'Phone and Pay' for more time.
