MORE THAN 100 volunteers who have helped deliver some of the largest events Sunderland has seen, have been officially thanked for their hard work and dedication.

The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Lynda Scanlan, welcomed 'Event Makers' from across the city into the Council Chamber to catch up with friends old and new and share their memories  and experiences.

The Mayor, Cllr Scanlan said: "I consider myself very fortunate to have been Mayor of this fantastic city at a time when we hosted some of the biggest events in Europe. It's been refreshing to experience the well-deserved positivity generated by our events this year and planning is already well underway for the ones to come in 2019.

"Working with council colleagues the Event Makers have supported everything from Active Sunderland BIG events, weekly walking  and Sporting Festivals to Penshaw Bowl, Sunderland Airshow and of course The Tall Ships Races 2018.

"I think we can all agree that all of these events and activities were only possible with their help, they should all feel very proud to have played their part in them."

Sunderland City Council's Head of Events, Victoria French added: "It is fantastic to see the support for events in Sunderland. Whether large or small many of them simply couldn't happen if it wasn't for the dedication and hard work of the many Event Makers and volunteer groups.

"I hope they will look back with fond memories, new friends and a sense of pride in all that they've achieved. I also hope many are feeling inspired to volunteer at future events such as the upcoming Sunderland Illuminations and Festival of Light."
