Local Offer

Description

Transport is procured, monitored and managed by the Together for Children to provide a high level of standards and safety for the children transported.

Criteria for Access

The Home to School Transport Policy is aimed at young people between the ages of 3-19 years old.  If a child has been issued an Education, Health and Care Plan by Together for Children then consideration for transport must be given.

Transport in the form of out-sourced taxis/minibuses will be provided if a young person lives over 2 miles (Primary) or 3 miles (Secondary) from their home address.  The provision must be named in the young person's Education, Health and Care plan and transport can be refused if the choice of school is as a result of parental preference over a closer school that could also meet the child's needs.

Distance is always measured using the shortest walking route and as accompanied by a responsible adult.  The young person must reside in a Sunderland Council address to be eligible for travel assistance unless Looked After and specific cases can be examined on an individual basis.

Young person, who may not have an Education, Health and Care Plan or live under the distance criteria, but have medical difficulties that impact upon travel, may also qualify for travel assistance.  Medical advice from the young person's consultant must be supplied on an annual basis supporting the family's request for transport.

Further information regarding criteria can be found in the Home to School Transport (see link on this page).
