Home to School Transport (Mainstream)

Provision of Free Travel Permits issued to qualifying children attending mainstream placements.  The Free Travel Permits are obtained from Nexus and allow the child to travel to and from school on public transport (metro/bus/ferry) free of charge, anytime before 7pm.  The Free Travel Permit can only be used on school days.

Criteria for access

Children must be of statutory school age to be eligible for this service and reside within the boundaries of Sunderland City Council. Children must also attend a qualifying school (i.e. community schools, academies or voluntary schools and Pupil Referral Units).

Primary aged children will be provided with free home to school transport to their nearest qualifying school where it is more than 2 miles (statutory walking distance) from their ordinary place of residence.

Secondary aged children may be provided with free home to school transport if they are attending their nearest secondary school and that school is over 3 miles (statutory walking distance) from their ordinary place of residence. 

Children entitled to free school meals, or those whose parents are in receipt of their maximum level of Working Tax Credit will also be entitled to free home to school transport if the secondary school they attend is one of the three nearest to their ordinary place of residence, and that school is more than 2 miles but less than 6 miles away from their ordinary place of residence.

In cases where a child is attending a school due to their religion or belief then the following criteria applies (evidence from families may be requested):

Children who are entitled to free school meals or whose parents are in receipt of their maximum level of Working Tax Credit; and:

  • Primary aged children: are attending their nearest suitable school preferred on the grounds of religion or belief where their ordinary place of residence is more than 2 miles away from that school.
  • Secondary aged children are attending their nearest suitable school preferred on the grounds of religion or belief where their ordinary place of residence is more than 2 miles, but not more than 15 miles from that school.
