Guides for buying technology

In this section you can find out about how and where to buy assistive technology and make sure you are getting the best price for what you need.

If you already know the technology product you want, you can buy it direct from the manufacturer.  There are positives and negatives for doing this.  A positive being you might get a better warranty and ongoing customer support.  A negative being you might end up paying more than you would if buying it from an online assistive technology supplier.

To help you with this we have a selection of regional and national technology suppliers in our Help to live at home category who offer a wide range of assistive technology products at different prices.

However it is always worthwhile checking what these main stream suppliers can offer;
Argos Independent Living
Boots Pharmacy
Lloyds Pharmacy

Before buying anything, we also recommend...

  • Checking whether any of the manufacturers/suppliers can offer a loan or try-before-you-buy scheme before committing to the purchase
  • Checking whether there are any additional costs to the purchase price as some products may have a regular subscription fee or will need regular maintenance
  • Reading product reviews, some of which are available on the Which website.  They have a dedicated area for mobility and disability aids, which covers assistive technology products.  They have also a list of top 10 questions to ask when buying assistive technology
