What are GPS (Global Positioning System) trackers?
These are products that can be worn to locate you or the person you care for in the form of watches, fobs, keyrings or apps on smart phones. Most GPS trackers use a SIM card and work in the same way as a smartphone. Advanced trackers have 2-way communication to allow your family to contact you in the event of an emergency.
Why are they useful?
Some trackers can locate an individual within 50 metres and are more reliable in built up areas. Other products use a Global Positioning System (GPS) which has an accuracy of up to 10 metres. Personal Locators rely on satellites so they dont work as well indoors.
Personal Locator products allow you to create 'safe zones' which are known locations where you or the person you care for can visit unaided, such as the garden or the local shop. If the Personal Locator moves outside of the ‘safe zone’, a text message alert will be sent to an authorised friend or family member.
Advanced Locators may also have 2-way communication which will allow you to use it like a phone the event of an emergency.
