Counselling

In this section you will find information and advice that can give you the opportunity to talk about experiences or events that have been affecting the way you feel.

What is counselling/therapy?

Counselling is a Talking Therapy that gives the opportunity to talk about experiences or events that have been affecting the way you feel. Common themes are stress, relationships, change, loss and distressing traumatic events.

Counselling helps people sort out their thoughts and feelings about their concerns to enable change.

There are some useful leaflets that can explain about therapy and how it works, you can find more information on the BACP website.

Find a counsellor or therapist

There is a Sunderland based counselling called the Sunderland Counselling Service.

This is a charity that has been established for almost thirty years and provides a range of counselling and support services for people in the City of Sunderland who are suffering from emotional or mental distress. This distress may arise as a result of bereavement, loss, illness or other life changing events, such as trauma or family breakdown. We also work with individuals suffering from mental ill health due to depression, anxiety, stress and other conditions.  You can find more information on the Sunderland Counselling Service website.

Please also look at our list of services in the Counselling section.

You can use the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy website to search for registered councillors in and around Sunderland, find more information on the BACP Find a Therapist web page.
