Where can I go to improve my health and fitness?

Health and Wellbeing

Active Sunderland
The Active Sunderland BIG Events and Area Festival programme takes place across venues throughout the city, so wherever you live there will be something happening near you.  Details of A-Z sports to leisure facilities can be found on the Council's Active Sunderland website. 

How can I become a Volunteer?

If you like helping others you may be interested in volunteering.  Whether it's in a club or at an event taking place in Sunderland, it's a great opportunity to gain experience and be part of a team.


Age UK Sunderland are looking for volunteers for their Keeping in Touch service -
T
his service offers companionship and support to older people across the City, view this video about Betty to see how volunteering really makes a difference to people's lives.  

The Friendly Faces home visiting service provides volunteers who make regular social visits, offering company and a friendly chat to older people who live alone, are housebound and have days when they see no one.  For those who prefer to chat without someone in their home, their Telephone Service offers a regular call to look forward to, building friendships and helping to alleviate loneliness.

Join the library
If you are not a member of one of our libraries you can join on line here and enjoy a host of free online materials, see below for more details.

Activities
Our libraries regularly hold activities and events, details can be found on the Council's What’s on in libraries web page.

Books at home service
If you are unable to access a library due to age, ill-health, disability or mobility problems whether its long or short-term.  Visit the books at home service to register.

E-books, E-audio books and E-magazines
Library members can borrow a selection of e-books, e-audio books and e-magazines.  This service is free and all you need to get started is your library card and PIN number.  If you don't have your PIN number or have forgotten it you can get it from City, Houghton-le-Spring or Washington Library.

Royal National Institute of Blind People
You can also sign up for the Royal National Institute of Blind People's free talking books by digital download service.
