How do I apply for a Blue Badge?

The Blue Badge scheme helps people with disabilities access essential community facilities.

Details about how to find out if you are eligible and how to apply can be found on the Council’s Blue Car Badge web page. 

Please be aware that the eligibility criteria for the award of a Blue Badge is changing and will soon include some new criteria that will broaden the number of people who will be able to benefit from the Blue Badge Scheme.

Although a national decision has been taken to do this, individual issuing authorities have not yet been given a date from when the new criteria will be introduced.

I’m struggling to get around, where can I find more travel options?

If you need assistance with traveling around the city, there are a number of different options available.

You can get help from community transport services for local and routine trips (like visiting the shops), or if you need medical or pre-planned hospital trips please look at our list of services in Transport and mobility section.

Where can I lease mobility equipment?

To get help to find mobility equipment, please look at our list of services in the Transport and mobility section, or you can find more information on the Council’s Wheelchair Service web page.  

Where can I find help to plan a journey?

There are many different services that can help you plan a journey in and around Sunderland, please look at our list of services in the Transport and mobility section.  Alternatively you can choose any of these options:

  • You can plan out your route via Google Maps, in which you can find out details about bus routes, walking paths and local taxi services as well as the time and distance to your planned destination.
  • You can use the Go Smarter planning service which can help you plan work, school routes and general sightseeing.
  • Or you can check the Sunderland City Council for other ways to get around via public transport.

How do I access a RADAR key for public toilets?

The National Key Scheme also known as RADAR aims to provide disabled key holders with independent access to the toiletsand increase the likelihood of the facilities being in a useable state.

There are a number of RADAR accessible toilets in Sunderland. 

If you need to purchase a RADAR Key, they can be bought from the Council's Customer Service Centres, details of these centres and opening times can be found on the Council's Customer Service web page.  They can also be bought online from the Disability Network.
